Acupuncture treatments can be life changing for many women.  With acupuncture, PMS symptoms such as irritability, tiredness, abdominal bloating or cramps, may be alleviated and improved. Ovarian cysts and fibroids which could be the cause of painful or even irregular periods can be also treated with acupuncture. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has identified points along the body to treat gynaecological problems and to address hormonal imbalances. It has been used to alleviate many aggravating and painful conditions for women over the years. Sessions are scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or as needed, according to the symptoms and condition of each individual. If you are on medication or undergoing some treatment, we will always work supporting it and ask you to consult your GP in case you have any doubts.

How can Acupuncture enhance natural fertility?

Acupuncture enhances circulation of blood in the pelvis, relaxes the cervix and uterus, regulates the menstrual cycle among other benefits. Acupuncture is also helpful in regulating hormone levels, especially low progesterone, and treating PCOS. Acupuncture is also excellent at treating stress and anxiety, which often occur with a diagnosis of infertility.

We always recommend to speak to your GP to address any fertility issues since you may need to get tests and advice.

Can I combine acupuncture with assistive reproductive technology (ART) such as IVF or IUI?

Yes. Women undergoing IVF were 65% more likely to become pregnant when they combined this procedure with acupuncture, a study has shown.

The remarkable success rate occurred across seven acupuncture trials involving 1,366 women in a systematic review and meta-analysis published in a February, 2008 issue of the British Medical Journal.

It is thought that acupuncture stimulates the neurotransmitters that trigger the production of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone, which controls the menstrual cycle and a woman's ovulation. Acupuncture is also thought to stimulate blood flow to the uterus and boost the production of endogenous opioids, inducing the body to relax.

When should I start my acupuncture treatment?

As soon as a woman knows she will begin IVF cycle is the best time, ideally. At the very least 1 month before transfer, once or twice per week, depending on each case. After the transfer within 24 hours ideally, to improve the chances of a successful pregnancy. After this last treatment, unless specific after care is needed, that should be your last acupuncture appointment to support your fertility program.

What about men?

According to the NHS, a low sperm count, also called oligozoospermia, is when a man has fewer than 15 million sperm per millilitre of semen. Sperm health is related to general health and can be addressed by looking at the diet and lifestyle. Acupuncture to help with this issue would be recommended if the sperm quality needs to improve. Supplements or diet and lifestyle changes may be recommended by your GP.
